Artist Statement:
The Wax Drawings lie in the core reality of struggle and chaos from which I work to extract a sense of elegance and hope.
With a background in psychology, I understand that in order to affect change I must first work though chaos – to attempt to see the underlying connections that exist between seemingly random events. Trust and a profound connection to the process, the act of painting or drawing itself, is what activates my work.
The Wax Drawings begin with a gesture, which is then preserved under a layer of wax. Working in the moment, layers of wax are built up with time and subtracted with heat. In the process, the simple interaction of gravity and gesture seem to create a moving picture.
To look at them individually, within the various groupings, the differences may appear subtle. Yet each has its own physicality and unique way of interacting with the elements and materials at play on the page. I am intrigued by how kinetic the work can appear in one moment and quiet the next - as if the physical energy has been quieted in the process of being created.
