Artist Statement:
The photographs in this series
came about as I was attempting
to sort through an identity
crisis. I seemed to have lost
track of who I am. After
speaking with a number of
people, some real, some
fictional, it seems most
everyone has developed so many
layers it’s difficult to
return to the core. We all
play so many roles, so many
different characters, that
it’s easy to lose track of our
true identities.
I’ve tried to take all of
these battling psyches of an
individual and compress them
into a single photograph.
I’ve combined in various
amounts, realities, dreams,
fantasies, fears, especially
the fears because that’s what
drives a lot of us, and thrown
them all on a page leaving
them to battle it out. Some
of the photographs turned into
portraits while others took on
a more narrative structure.
Hopefully I’ve captured the
complexities of some of these
people, both real and
fictional, that I spoke with.

Dear Greg,I'm fascinated by your photographs. Do you paint or make marks on the photographs or are you doing your other in the computer? How many negatives do you use? Could you give me an overview of your technique?Sallie

Really powerful-I felt myself crazy looking at them remembering...feeling those disintegrating moments that seem to plague me at dead ends and crossroads...and quiet lonely moments. Just who are we anyway? Are we our faces? Your work explores the questions of identity with fearsome beauty.

Dear Markstrom,Your photographs are more than creative paintings. You are a romantic painter with camera rather than brush. With best wishesO.P.Joshi Jaipur IndiaPlease visit webwww.artistman.net
