Statement
I am a conceptual installation artist. Most of the work I create cannot exist without the space or site in which it is exhibited. My materials primarily consist of ceramics and yarn. By “drawing” (using yarn as line) through a 3 dimensional space I create atmospheres or environments in which the viewer can be engulfed. Many of the pieces refer to astronomical space inspired by String Theory, the theory of relativity, angles of parallelism, black holes, and other theories of physics. Despite the macro scale implied by most of the work I also try to include microscopic points of reference by comparing the nature of the universe in it’s entirety to the minute sections of cell structures and organelles. My work is inspired by methods of Craft and references of Heritage Art while building upon those movements a different kind of form and language by opening, altering, and expanding, its traditional materiality.

derek I have had the pleasure of seeing most of these pieces. They are so comforting to be around. They are a 21st century tapestry reflecting the new science of fractals. They are warm and fuzzy too. They work really well together too: I would consider buying 2 pieces and putting them together in a room with some other very textural fabrics on the furniture to really be encompassed by the warmth.
