Artist Statement:
The art of Suhas Tavkar shows
a unique relationship between
the human form and the human
touch that created it.

Ever since I could remember,
as a child growing up in
India, I was always fascinated
with our universe, thinking of
it as God's created largest
art gallery with display of
all different size planets and
stars. We see this God's
exhibit during the day with
the sunlight and at night with
the moonlight. So far, our
living planet is one of
nature's greatest art pieces.
Our oceans are God's created
largest and mysterious
aquariums. I think every
living creature on earth is an
artist and also a wonderful
piece of art by itself.

With that fascination towards
nature and art, I strived to
create something as unique as
the world around us.

Suhas Tavkar was born in 1942
and raised in Mumbai, (Bombay)
India. He was taught the art
of fingernail embossing as a
child, at the age of 4 by his
father Anant who in turn,
learned it from his father. As
a teenager, Suhas would
entertain his friends by
embossing their names in
calligraphy in both Marathi
(his native language), and in
English. ...

With a casual look in a local shopping district one can find manicure / pedicure places as well as places which create nail art. If you try to find nail art using Google, more than a million items will be there for browsing. Many businesses are thriving by using finger nails as a medium on which creative talents are displayed. Mr. Suhas Tavkar, instead of using nails as the medium to display art, uses his finger nails as tools to create a very unique art form. His fingers, I mean nails, have transformed paper and even metal into beautiful pieces of art which can be seen at absolutearts website. A truly magnificent work, unique art, and unusually rare talent.

Suhas you bring hand-made to a new level. I was amazed when I realized these works of art are not machine embossed but carefully done by hand using only fingernails. A joy to behold. Simon

Fluid lines and exquisite shadows sketch out human and animal forms on art paper - some are intricately detailed, others are efficiently minimal - all these are nail markings? Most impressive! :) Thank you, Suhas, for sharing the work of your skilled hands. Wish you the joy of good work and much success.

Sir, your art is incredible. It is hard to imagine that such detail can be achieved with mere finger nails. Your art is unique and I wish you the very best!

This is a truly unique art form - it is hard to believe that such intricate detail can be achieved without tools other than our own fingernails. Your talent and craft is amazing. Best of luck with your collection!

This is rare art that takes great skill and concentration. Out of many thousands of artists, there may only be a handful that can work with this medium. You are the only artist we know of that has discovered this art form.

Dear Shri Suhas Tavkar, It was very nice meeting you at Maharashtra Mandal Diwali Funcion on Nov 12th 2006. I looked at all the pictures in your site and I was amazed that you could draw such fine pictures by simply using fingernails of 3 fingers. Please let me know at what age you started drawing pictures. Did you learn this art from someone? I am sure this is in-born talent. I would like to visit exihibition in July 2007 in New York. Please send me an e-mail at that time. Awaiting your reply, Kind Regards, Dr. Narasinha Kamath
