Hi Cecilia!
It seems a long time since we met, but I wanted to say we are thinking of you and of your wonderful paintings, which, as a fellow artist, you know I admire hugely!
I've copied my review of your work at Arad County Museum here if that's OK with you?
-----------------------------------
Cecilia Fernandez has exhibited 7 paintings at Arad Count Museum in Romania, and the first thing that the wandering eye notices are her use of ladders as symbolic elements. Both drawn and painted into the surfaces of the paint they seem to be symbols of connection from low to high, from here to there, from inner to outer in pictorial space. The colours are exquisite, contrasting copper-aged greens with delicious burnt reds and oranges suggestive of the passage of years both in the heart and in the physical self.
There are hints of discovery in the paintings, of half remembered fragments beneath the surface evoking memories, dreams and significant moments and above all, a sense of loss.
Taking time to study the paintings one becomes aware of yet more symbols: arrows; a pointing finger which is both accusing and suggesting direction; hints of handwriting which

seems mirrored as if to disguise intent; small fragments of photographic daguerreotype embedded into the paint suggest difficult childhood memories. These pictorial elements are both discovered as if by accident and yet deliberately placed in the compositional structure of the paintings. Fernandez’ surfaces are like topographical journeys into the process of communication.
These paintings evoke an empathy of spirit, a kinship with a world that seems half remembered, half forgotten. The sense of scale is important here, with the larger paintings succeeding even more in conveying the eye to deeper places.
The wandering eye moves on and out into the world at large both intrigued and refreshed by these paintings, for Fernandez has succeeded admirably in her intentions to bring heart, spirit and a deeper sense of communication to us all.
